I. Main Components of Diesel Generator Sets: 1. Crankshaft and Main Bearings A crankshaft is a long shaft fitted into the lower part of the cylinder block. It has offset connecting rod journals, i.e., crankshaft crankpins, which are used to convert the reciprocating motion of the piston connecting rod into rotary motion. Oil passages are drilled inside the crankshaft to supply lubricating oil to the main bearings and connecting rod bearings. The main bearings supporting the crankshaft in the cylinder block are sliding bearings.
